L.A.'s answer to PJ Harvey has just dropped another nugget of fun on ravenous fans. The singer-songwriter's CD release show June 3 at West Hollywood's Troubadour was a frenetic and sexy explosion of raucous guitars and powerful vocals. Loud, angry chick music never sounded so good.
War Tapes, The Continental Divide (Released: May 26, 2009)
At first glance, one might look at this band (consisting of brother and sister Neil and Becca Popkin) and think, "Holy shit! Angry white kids!" But that couldn't be farther from the truth. War Tapes is by far the nicest group of talented musicians making a splash on the local scene today. Tracks like "Mind is Ugly" erase any question that this band doesn't deserve all the success in the world. Catch War Tapes currently on tour with vnv. The band will also be making an appearance on ABC Family's "Greek."
Butterfly Boucher, ScaryFragile (Released: June 2, 2009)
Oh, Butterfly: Loving you is easy 'cuz you're beautiful. Here's a lady with a rockin' disc full of songs that will make even the most hip of all hipsters snap his or her fingers while tapping those Converse-clad toes. Boucher's recent stint at Los Angeles' Spaceland has added an even larger number of fans to her growing list of worshipers.
Starfucker, Jupiter (Released: May 5, 2009)
Perhaps one of the finest releases this year. Singer and founder Josh Hodges has carved out a deep groove in the hearts of many. Jupiter boasts a number of winning hits including "Medicine," "Boy Toy," and the infectious, "Rawnald Gregory Erickson II." If you can't handle dance music at its finest, then keep on walking. Because this disc is only for SERIOUS music fans.
