It takes a confident girl to rock the body-conscious designs of Kelly Dempsey. The Boston-based fashion maven has created a collection of fierce, colorful and innovative pieces sure to dazzle young Hollywood and other assorted fashionistas. Dempsey's cocktail dresses have so wowed fashion's elite that she was recently tapped to participate in New York's Fashion Week. Other high-profile events have followed suit, which will surely catapult her into the limelight.
Dempsey joins a growing line of cutting-edge designers who are self-taught. Her skill-set is admittedly a work-in-progress, one that she is proud to continue, but admits is an uphill battle. "I would definitely have to say the most difficult aspect would be the fact that I am completely self-taught. When I got chosen to do New York Fashion Week in January, I was excited and very scared at the same time," she admits. "Out of seven designers, I was the only one self-taught. All the other designers went to FIT or Parsons. I was glad I was thrown right in, because I had no time to worry and wanted to see what the world thought. I had a great outcome and am doing many more Fashion Weeks in the fall." While other creators are moving toward a minimalist view with minor shocks of color, this is one designer who embraces the lively and electric aspect of her craft. "One of my main inspirations is color," says Dempsey. "I don't know if I could pick one particular color, it all depends on what the collection is inspired by. For example, my last collection is based around my trip to Puerto Rico. The mood of everyone one there is uplifting, and no one is in a hurry or stressed out. The tropical colors are what inspired me. The teals of the ocean, and the oranges and reds from the beautiful vegetation. I believe what you wear portrays your personality. It is the first thing somebody is going to notice about you. If you're wearing something bright and fun, you are going to send that message out, and that is what I am all about." The Kelly girl is exciting and eccentric. She's liable to be the hottest honey in the club--commanding worlds of attention on the dance floor or in the glow of the paparazzi's flash bulbs. "I think my customer would be a girl going out on the town and wanting to get noticed. Some of my dresses are a little fancier, so special events and parties as well," says Dempsey. Based on that description, she has her eye on one celebrity whom she feels embodies the spirit of her line. "I would have to say Paris Hilton. She wears a lot of color, and mini dresses with the poofy bottom. I love tulle material." This may give Betsey Johnson--Dempsey's design idol and fellow mistress of quirk--a complete run for the money. Even better is the fact that this talented New Englander continues to forge ahead with a devil-may-care attitude and a strong sense of self. The professional advice that governs her career? "Make sure to have a thick shell," she says. "One year someone will say your work is horrible, and the next year they want to carry your collection. Its a tough industry but I like a challenge!" ¤
